Nic Cage, God of Acting (via i09)

Please don’t diss. I know you can’t help but point out the glaringly obvious: the awful hair, the humorously over-the-top acting designed to overcompensate for partially blind or deaf audiences, the lecherous smile, the borderline psychotic off-camera shenanigans (ie: buying himself a pyramid as his eventual tomb).

All those things aside, there is and will be, no other like him. He will go down as the greatest and craziest, cult-movie method actor who owns every cool thing in the world and has successfully made a killing despite having entered the “I Seriously Don’t Give A Shit About My Career” phase since 1998 (that’s 14 years of Nic Cage mindfuckery).

Which is why you should read this. Choice cuts:

And he’s not like some actors, who just sort of cling to a shred of dignity while they’re roaming through terrible situations and insane moments of not-quite-comedy. Kimbra - “Wandering Limbs”

There’s a lot going on in the chord progressions and melody of this song that didn’t really shine forth in the over-produced album version. Find a picturesque alleyway, strip it down to the bare essentials and perform it with a Robbie Savage lookalike and wa-hey, you have an almost-masterpiece!

Side note: in terms of capturing single-take live music performances, the lapel mics used must’ve been of the amazeballs variety.

Today marks the one year anniversary of my plunge into self-employment! Things that have drastically changed in my life:

Public holidays have become an alien concept. Weekends too!
Despite not having to, I probably wake up early more consistently than I used to when I worked full-time. I think it’s more to do with doing it cos I can, not cos I have to.
I spend far less time stuck in traffic jams. Consequently, the bar in the chart that details the growth of bedroom clutter has skyrocketed.
I finally managed to whittle down 50% of my comics “to read” list.
I’ve traded all my tech-y, work-related podcasts for ones that either cover football, gaming or football.
Due to the fact that I used to catch up on TV shows while stuck in traffic jam, I’ve probably watched less TV than back when I was well, stuck in more traffic jams.
Improvements to professional skillset offerings: drafting legal documents, 15% increase in capacity for small-talk, 25% increase in capacity for taking bullshit.

By the same point next year, I’m aiming to have graduated to running a business that warrants hiring an army of zombie interns who do my bidding (mainly, trips to Tesco for donut runs).

Halfway through reading Orc Stain and I was trying very hard to suppress a barrage of prematurely positive hyperbole. “This is fucking good shit!” kept creeping through my head as I sifted through page after page of James Stokoe’s kinetic artwork and clever storytelling.

True, there’s a fair bit that would turn the average nun off (see: penis fascination, overzealous gore, general grossness of orcs) - but put that aside, there is so much to appreciate and marvel at when you consider Stokoe wrote, drew, inked, colored and lettered all of it himself.

Am almost done with Volume 1. In a short moment, I will be sadfacing at the thought of having to wait at least another year or so before Volume 2 is wrapped up.

So, back when I used to work with Junk, we had a campaign called Junk Records - one of those “Behold! It’s a search for fresh new talents in the scene!” kinda thingos. One of the bands that made the final cut was Halfway Kings, my toss in the hat courtesy of someone on my Facebook circle posting up links of their YouTube ditties.

As with a host of names that got a break through Junk and moved on to bigger things, I can very clearly identify this as one of those cool moments where I got to be a cog in the wheel of a band that has rightfully and deservedly moved on to greater things - extrapolating their influence from the periphery of the YouTubes and illegal, guerilla-style street gigs to seeing them play in music festivals, become sneaker ambassarors and really, who knows what else?

For now, they’re content to celebrate their 2-year anniversary with a small do in a cosy little furniture store in Bukit Bintang called Pieces (next to No Black Tie) this Saturday, 26 November. Apart from Halfway Kings themselves, I’ll be playing too along with The Impatient Sisters - y’all are invited too!

Come hang, there’ll be drinks and good music and hand-made Mr. Fox face masks for you shy types! Event is free. More deets here!

Ok, so I’m probably not gonna bother with Saints Row: The Third (see: Skyrim), but for what it’s worth, it deserves a mention for being a veritable kick-in-the-gonads victory for offensively OTT games.

The complete disregard for political correctness and single-minded quest for mother-sickening outrageousness makes this look like an insanely fun game to play. That is, if you’re okay with:

Thwocking your enemies with purple dildo bats (note the choice of sound effect).
Army camo costumes? Pfft. How about full-body furry suits?
Repeatedly getting yourself get hit by cars to collect insurance fraud money.
Manapults = catapults + humans as ammo.
Naked skydiving.

Added to the fact that the game developers seem like genuinely funny, albeit twisted and slightly sociopathic guys gives this game an added dose of charm. Quote: “A good night for a furry is a terrible night for the dry cleaners.”

Get this if you’re huge on GTA but wish those guys who make weird Japanese sex-fetish games had a hand in it.
