Valentines Schmalentines.
Apart from being able to rally lonely hipsters, bitter intellectuals and emo kids in a unifying chorus of anti-Valentines sentiments, it’s not really good for much, no?
For starters, it’s a piss-poor excuse for eateries and florists to quadruple their prices for a day just so daft blokes can correlate the size of their love to the size of the bill (ditto: supersizing rose bouquets).
And don’t get me started on those overzealous couples who tastelessly flood your Facebook/Twitter stream with tacky love poems or quotes paraphrased from Hallmark greeting cards. Eg:
“Anyone can catch your eye, but it takes someone special to catch your heart. Baby, you caught my heart and I love you alwiz and 4eva! ~muacKz~”
Barf.
But while I spew about why Valentines Day seems like calendar schlock, it’s ironic that I’m posting this track up* because:
- I don’t care much for Valentines Day
- The people this post is addressed to don’t seem to care much for it either
- I spent most of the weekend rushing this out in time for Valentines Day and now that it is Valentines and the realization that none of us seem to give a crap has sunken in, it kinda feels rather anti-climatic
Oh well. To Radiance, Happy Valentines Day (on behalf of Wern Shen)!
Even though it’s just like any other day in the calendar, at the very least, today you got something you don’t normally get (unless Wern Shen’s been going around soliciting songs from other songwriters - no, right? Right?).
==============
* Backstory: A few weeks ago, we had an office new year party and there was an auction to raise funds for charity. It was one of those affairs where people auctioned off things like homemade brownies, chauffeuring/babysitting services, half-naked carwashes… etc.
Not being particularly proficient at lewd carwashes, my contribution was to write (and record) a song about the buyer’s topic of choice.
Wern Shen very graciously and generously outbidded everyone else and since then we’d been exchanging tons of (awkward) e-mails on what the song would be about. There is no greater inelegance than two dudes trying their best to discuss “feelings” via e-mail.
==============
In any case, it’s been an odd year or so since I’ve written/recorded a new song and if anything, Valentines connection aside, I had lots of fun doing it. Hope y’all like the track and Happy Valentine’s Day (if you’re into that sort of thing).
PS: Special thanks to Eugene and Bel for the last minute bass tracks and ooh-ing and aah-ing!
