#40: “I Try” - Macy Gray (1999)

The very first pirated CD I ever bought was her first album. I thought it was refreshing to hear a Top 10 hit by someone who sang like her throat had been lubricated by turpentine (and possibly hair as well, in place of shampoo).

10 years on, the universe decided to correct itself and now we have Corinne Bailey Rae.

In 1999, I bought my very first pirated CD from Taman Tun’s pasar malam. I still have it in a shoebox somewhere.
